Then We Came To The End by Joshua Ferris
I read this book a few weeks after I resigned from work and it was a perfect representation of all the stress, drama and comedy of corporate life. Needless to say, I could really relate haha!
This book follows the lives of the employees of an advertising agency that's on the brink of collapse. After years of growth, the company is struggling to remain competitive. And the employees who used to have it so easy are now facing the possibility of lay-offs.
It's a story about how the employee's personal lives relate to their work life. And it also about how the latter always seems to take a back-seat for a long time before it comes back to bite them on the ass big-time. The story also speaks about the psychological impact of being an employee in this day and age. It's not as easy as it used to be. And while this book was written to be a funny, the issues that underlie the context of things are very serous. And they're very real.
So if you're a corporate rat, read this book! If you're on the verge of a burnout, read this book ASAP! :)

The Postmistress by Sarah Blake
This is the book I'm reading now. My initial reactions to reading the synopsis for this book made me really unsure about it. It was set around the time of the second world war and needless to say I'm not a big fan of this era. But National Bookstore Cebu was having a 20% on all their bestsellers and I had to buy something! And this book was less than P300 so I was lured once again.
I read a few pages during dinner. It was around eight when I finished malling, so I grabbed a bite to eat before going home. I couldn't put it down. And I was laughing by myself reading! I couldn't help it. The opening scene was HILARIOUS. I'm sure you've never read anything like what this lady was doing at the doctor's office.
Anyway, I was sidetracked by work all week. Hopefully I can resume reading this weekend.
